Your lecturers, tutors and support staff are striking because university bosses refuse to address our concerns about pay inequality, increasing casualisation, increasing workloads and pay and pension cuts.
At Queen Mary female staff are paid on average less than men, BAME staff less than their white colleagues. Too many colleagues are on fractional and short-term contracts. For years workload has been increasing.
We don't want to strike, but when employers refuse to deal with these issues, we have to say stop. After asking nicely for years, to do nothing is to be complicit in these practices and outcomes.
Lord Clement-Jones is the Chair of Council (equivalent to the board of directors for the university) and Professor Colin Bailey is the principal (CEO of the univeristy). Writing to them will put pressure on management to address workers' concerns.
